What's the meaning of IP65 for displays?

In displays, IP65 is an Ingress Protection rating code that defines how well the display's enclosure is protected against solid objects (like dust) and liquids (like water).

This code is defined by the international "Ingress Protection" standard, often referred to as the "dust-proof and water-proof" rating.

Breakdown of the IP Code

The two digits following "IP" each have a specific meaning:

First Digit: Protection against solid objects (in this case, 6)

· 6: This is the highest level of dust protection.
· Meaning: Completely dust-tight. Dust cannot enter the enclosure, and it provides complete protection against contact.

Second Digit: Protection against liquids (in this case, 5)

· 5: Protection against low-pressure water jets.
· Meaning: Protection against low-pressure water jets from any direction. This means a nozzle (6.3mm in diameter) can spray water at the display enclosure from all directions at a rate of 12.5 liters per minute, a pressure of 30 kPa, from a distance of 3 meters, for at least 3 minutes without harmful effects on the equipment.

Practical Meaning for Displays

A display labeled IP65 means:

1. Excellent Dust Protection: It is ideal for use in dusty environments such as construction sites, factory floors, warehouses, kitchens, or roadside outdoor locations. Dust will not get inside the display to affect its operation.
2. Water Jet Resistance: It can withstand water spray. You can wipe it with a wet cloth or rinse the enclosure directly with a faucet or hose (Note: This typically refers to the display body itself and does not guarantee the screen will be undamaged if hit with a high-pressure jet while powered on; installation angle and pressure should still be considered). It can handle rain and water splashes.

Common Applications

· Outdoor digital billboards
· Displays for industrial automation control rooms
· Information displays in kitchens or restaurants
· Public kiosks
· Medical or laboratory environments that require frequent cleaning

Important Notes

· Not for Submersion: IP65 does not mean the display can be submerged in water. It will likely be damaged if immersed. Ratings for submersion are typically IP67 or IP68.
· Consider the Full Specification: Besides the IP rating, displays used in such environments often also feature high brightness (to combat direct sunlight), wide operating temperature ranges (to adapt to extreme cold or heat), and greater durability.

To summarize:

IP65 is a very important feature for a display, indicating that it is a rugged piece of equipment that is completely dust-tight and can withstand water jets, making it highly suitable for use in harsh, dusty, or wet industrial, commercial, and outdoor environments.
